Prevention is the first step...

Not too long ago one of my clients called in a panic saying "Help me, my web site has been hacked, what do I do?" Luckily I was able to quickly repair her web site with no data loss but the end result could have been a lot worse.

A Hacker is best described as a someone that has nothing better to do with their time than to make everyone else's life miserable by breaking into people's web sites and steeling, deleting, corrupting, or spreading around some malware virus simply because they can.

It's important to understand that while you cannot prevent against hackers 100% of the time, you can take steps to make it more difficult for them to break in.

Things that you can do now:

• If you are editing your web site remember to download and keep "Malware Bytes" running at all times
• Remember to log out after you are done editing
• Update your login passwords often (at least once a month)
• Call your hosting provider to set up monthly web space and database backups (Your Page Today is not responsible for this as the host package owner only you can set this up)

Things that we can do on a monthly basis (fee: $500 per month payable in advance with signed contract only)

• Update your  server / cpanel /ftp / and other web space important passwords monthly
• Update your word press plug-ins and versions monthly
• Monitor your web site security monthly with an automated system that emails alerts
• Monthly back up of your ftp files (this does not include your database (those content management tools, a database back is critical in preventing data loss)
