We know that Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing your web site to be visible to search engine spiders and crawlers BUT did you know that if you have a very high rate of competition for the services you offer, raking with those keywords that you wish to be found with, often times makes it impossible to rank high or even at all!

In a case such as this you have a couple of options:

1: Instead of using vague key words or phrases try being found for those keywords that are called “long tail keywords”.

For instance In my field, there is a very high competition rate, therefore if I wanted to be found for the keywords “web design” the chances of that are slim to none, as there thousands of other web design companies also attempting to be found for that as well.

However, I would prefer to be searched for and found for those more qualified leads that are desired. So, if I then be a little more specific and try to rank for “web design ma” I rank in top position, therefore yielding more desirable results and less results of those that I may not want as clients anyway. As most of those searching for “web design” are those seeking free designs or templates, and those are not my target.

Now, if take it one step further, creating my “long tail keywords”,  thus yielding more desired searches for the client I am targeting, I rank in top position for “Custom web design ma”. As my target audience are those in MA, and those seeking custom design and not something free or templated.

2: Your other option, if you find that you truly need to be found for specific keywords KNOWING that your audience will search for you with very specific keywords, then your best chance to be found for that is to create a pay per click campaign through Goggle.

Pay Per Click...how it works

Google.com AdWords ads connect businesses with new customers at the precise moment when they're looking for your products or services. The Google Network reaches more than 80% of Internet users. With Google.com AdWords, you create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience, and pay only when someone clicks on them.

Every time a search results in a click to the Company A web site, Company A will pay the desired amount. A daily maximum can be set to control costs.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) allows you to advertise in search engines such as Goggle. (called Ad Words) or Yahoo. (Pay-Per-Click is also called Paid-Placement, Pay for Performance, and P4P).

You can also control the placement of your ads. The more you bid against your competitors, the higher your ad will be placed. When a user clicks on your ad, they come to your web site and you pay for that click. With Pay Per Click, you can set a MAXIMUM bid, works sort of like a silent auction ... for instance if you have just one competitor (in a world called perfect) and they bid a max of 2.00 per click on the same keyword phrase as you and you bid 3.00 per click on that phrase, when someone types that keyword phrase and find you and clicks into your site, you then pay 2.01 for that click as you have bid a max of 3.00 but since he only bid 2 then you pay a penny more and your top ranking. If he bids for instance 2.50 per click then Goggle. will put you in at 2.51 and again your top! BUT it will only put you in up to your maximum bid.

There are two major PPC services: Goggle. Ad words, owned by Goggle., and Overture, which is Yahoo's PPC service.

PPC has precise tracking tools. You can measure click and conversion rate. You can delete ads and campaigns that don't work. With PPC, you know precisely to the number of clicks which ad works. You can delete the ads that don't work and concentrate your budget on the ads that work. By deleting the bad ads and developing new ads based on the good ads, your campaign will improve, month after month.
